内容简介

\"The baby was originally given to your sister-in-law. Thinkingshe might not treat him properly, I am giving him to you.\"
This was what Mother had been told by the goddess of childbearing in her dream. She often recounted to we brothers and sisters (and sometimes my nanny too) that strange dream of hers while doing her sewing in her south-facing room after midday on a fine day.

精彩书摘

In the spring of 1927, I began writing novels in Paris. I lived in the Latin Quarter, not very far from the Pantheon. The street beside the Pantheon was very quiet. There were two bronze statues of Rousseau and Voltaire. Being with those two French thinkers, those great writers of the Age of Enlightenment, I had a deep impression of the \"citizen of Geneva\" who dreamt of eliminating inequality and oppression. When I passed the statues, I often complained about my loneliness and misery as a foreigner, I knew less about Voltaire. However, I did know that he fought to put right the cases of the old man Calas, Sirven,La Barre and Lally-Tollendal. He had their wrongful convic-tions overturned, the deceased victim's name exonerated and the survivors saved from execution. I knew of his actions to safeguard truth and justice and admired him. There were two other great writers buried in the Pantheon: Hugo and Zola. Zola had fought to overthrow the wrongful conviction of Captain Dreyfus. He defended the victim even at the risk of his own life, eventually exposed how it was a setup, had the judgment xoverturned, and let the victim come into the light from his human hell.
This is what I learned at that time from French writers.
Though I did not put into practice what I had learned, I do feel grateful to those masters when I think back. When the Gang of Four was riding roughshod, I did not sell my soul. This was because of the education I had received in the past. That edu-cation had come from life, friends, books and, of course, from masters and readers. Was the \"education\" I had received from French writers a case of \"getting involved in life\"?
